The Philosophy Department again went all out to celebrate World Philosophy Day, a UNESCO-sponsored event that occurs each year on the third Thursday of November. Members of the Philosophers’ Guild did a masterful job of chalking quotations from philosophers famous and not-so-famous, and the department served cake at the Old Main Tea Trolley on Friday.
Is it purely coincidence, or did the UNIESCO officials look at their calendars and notice “hmmmmm, the Great American Smoke-Out happens on the third Thursday of November. What BETTER day to celebrate philosophy and philosophers than the day when Americans are trying to quit smoking?” Philosophy is, of course, the last bastion of (variously):
smokers and smoking
and the defenses thereof. (More on that anon.)
